How to Practice Self-Care During Changing Times

There’s more to being well than just exercising and consuming healthy fare. Taking a comprehensive approach to your health— nourishing your mind, body, and soul—is critical for your overall well-being. We like to describe this as self-care. Here are a number of our favorite methods for practicing self-care.

Stay Connected

We may be engaging in social distancing, but that doesn’t mean we can’t stay connected! Arrange a digital coffee time or happy hour with your friends. Keep it uplifting and tell each other a good thing that happened to you in the last week. Make plans for when you can see each other again and how great it will be to give them a huge, warm hug. Together we are stronger and can support each other. That’s what friends are for!

Follow a Flexible Routine

Build an agenda for your yourself but let there be some flexibility. For instance, wake up around the same time each morning and turn in to bed around the same time every night. Draft your objectives for the day and slate out your work projects, but give yourself some time for your daily workout, a walk around the neighborhood, or to turn to your favorite book. Don’t be too severe with your agenda that you create avoidable stress. Maintaining a balance between routine and recreation will help you have a more constructive and gratifying day.

Practice Gratitude

Appreciation is good for us. The more gratitude we afford to others during troubled times, the more cheerful and stronger we become. Allow others grace. One of our preferred ways to offer gratitude is to contact a loved one and express to them how much you love them. A handwritten note is also a refreshing and wonderful surprise that is certain to make a person’s day.

Get Outside

There’s not a thing better than spending time outdoors, breathing the fresh air. Take a break and walk with your pup every day after lunch. Wave hello to your neighbors (from a safe distance) and ask them how they’re holding up. Stay in the sunshine for a while and practice taking slow breaths—you will feel so much better!

Find Joy

Just because we can’t go out together at our local favorites doesn’t mean we can’t savor our food! Make a new dish for dinner and make your meals feel special. Dance to your favorite music, get the kiddos in on the process, and have some fun with it!

Your outlook on life affects your entire life and affects your actions. And during these strange times, it’s even more crucial to take care of ourselves and our loved ones. Let’s take this time to implement healthy routines and rise out of this quarantine healthier and happier!
