Being motivated isn’t magic. There isn’t a “motivation pill” you can swallow every morning that starts your motivation. So what do you do when you’re feeling stuck?

There are times when we experience barriers or setbacks. Whether you’re experiencing a bad day, feeling frazzled at work, or merely don’t know where to start, it’s important to establish your “why.”

Your why is the intent behind what you’re working toward. Fully determining your why will help you remain driven during those difficult days and continue to work toward your personal goals.

Today, take some time to consider your why–your objective–for why you’re working toward something.

Once you determine your why, jot it down on a piece of paper and keep it in a place you’ll spot it every day, like your nightstand or bathroom mirror. When you’re feeling lost or unmotivated, think about your why and let that drive you to persist in achieving your goals.

What’s your goal? Get rid of weight? Gain fitness? Change your eating habits?

Defining goals is a fundamental piece of the healthy habits we teach at Farrell’s Stillwater. See it for yourself during a free week with us.

How to Remain Motivated After Determining Goals

Now that you’ve established your why, here are some fantastic suggestions to help you stay energized to achieve your goals!

Make it Part of Your Routine

This sounds uncomplicated, but establishing new ways can be challenging. It takes about a month to develop a habit. Whatever your goal, make time to chip away at it daily.

If you want to exercise first thing, schedule it on your calendar. If you want to plan your meals every Sunday, pencil it in your planner. With three weeks of following it, it will become a component of your daily routine.

Keep it Simple

Portion your goals into smaller, more possible assignments. For example, if you want to complete a marathon, you start training by running one mile a day–not 26!

Take this same technique every time to make a new goal. Reduce it into smaller objectives that will lead you to the final goal.

Make it Exciting

There’s no reason you can’t have fun during the process! Having a good time is not your opponent–in reality, it can be a great driving force. Make time to to appreciate your work.

With all new responsibilities, you will learn and grow as you progress. And if your tasks are especially difficult, pamper yourself once you’ve completed them!

Visualize the Finish Line

Create a mental picture of yourself achieving your goals: What does it look like? How do you feel in that instant?

Creating a mental picture is a great aid that can help keep you on schedule and inspired while working toward your goal. It’s a particularly valuable technique when your tasks are challenging.

Be Consistent

Take consistent action every single day–even if you’re not in the mood. Some days you may take a lot of action, while other days you might take not as much action. That’s OK! The important part is to stay consistent.
